Close followers of my blog will notice an underlying affiliation and love for Poland's leading extreme metal outfit Behemoth. That is with good reason, as it seems that whenever this band unifies to unleash fresh sounds they take our world by storm, shifting the conversation topic and creating undoubtable anticipation. The band and the primary songwriter/frontman Nergal have the ability to reshape the direction of extreme metal, diversifying the external influences that can be used to create provocative music which requires the listeners patience, understanting and more importantly, open mindedness. With every release in this band's catalogue I find myself digesting a completely new and unique body of work, one can say they are monuments of their own.
2018 brought us an album which follows the criteria set above. I most recently reviewed the band's latest album which can be found on my blog. However, I cannot fail to mention that their latest record flows perfectly with the ethos of the band. It seems after multiple listens I am still discovering layers or sections which are still foreign to me. Not only that, even with older Behemoth records it seems that previous opinions of what I might have perceived to be weaker material has now blossomed, in my eyes, to be works of perfection. That to me, is exactly what this band brings to the table. Their newest release is precisely what the metal genre and moreover, the extreme metal genre required. A forefront band to shift the direction and break the previous blueprint. It does not require much effort or thought for myself to justify why this band is one of the leading names in the genre currently, they are more than deserving.
The band's evolution over the last 20 years has seen a string of records which are milestones, relinquishing brutality on its listeners whilst simultaneously managing to evolve from its predecessor. Based off the efforts of the latest record it seems to me that the band has found a fresh sound which was spawned from The Satanist, and the third act of this band is revealing itself to be one of legacy and excitement.
