The latest band that I had the pleasure of reviewing is Rebellix, hailing from Helsinki, Finland. Hearing this album was a blast from the past but also brought something new to the table. I always love hearing bands and music which are so heavily influenced by the thrash scene from the 1980's. It's partly because of the nostalgia, but also its great to see that bands are taking what has already been done and making it their own sound. Rebellix takes elements from each member of the Big 4 and has released an EP which has a classic sound and is great to listen to.
From the opening Playin' with my Devil, I was impressed by both the production and the quality of the riffing. The band has the tightness of Slayer, the rhythm ability and songwriting of Metallica, Megadeth's technicality and Anthrax's head-banging and fun riffs. I must give extra attention to the lead guitarist, whose playing and soloing was flawless to the note, the solos are interesting and go perfectly over the rhythm, as a guitar player myself I respect that. That brings me to my next point, the rhythm section is incredibly tight, and the riffs are heavy and great to listen to.
The quality of the production is great and the guitar tone definitely stands out. The bass comes through perfectly, and extra amplification on the kick pedal means that Rebellix as a whole sound very full and undoubtedly heavy. I really loved the old school thrash elements and dual guitars which reminded me of classic Iron Maiden.
These 4 songs are a great undertaking by Rebellix and they definitely have a bright future, and it's great to see metal being taken into unique and original ways.
