I wouldn't say I'm into anything to the upmost extreme, but I do make one exception, and that comes to heavy metal. I have always gravitated to the more extreme sound of the genre, as many tend to do after a few years. However it becomes increasingly difficult to find bands who are original and doing things that you haven't quite heard before. I was stunned when I discovered Egypt's Crescent. This band has definitely been listening to a lot of Behemoth, and when I say a lot... I mean a lot. Crescent have taken blackened death metal to new realms with their Egyptian inspired music and have produced a 2nd album which is quite mesmerising.
From the first seconds I was drawn in, and I felt that excitement that I get when I listen to bands that I already love. The music is so heavy I could barely sit still and the blending of Egyptian flavours fits so perfectly with that classic death metal sound we all know. On top of this the band infuses black metal influences in the music, and this makes for a cocktail of extremism. I could not be happier that I found this rather unknown band. The band members are highly skilled in their instruments and it is sometimes hard to follow exactly what is going on.
This album had me constantly rewinding or repeating songs because the riffs where simply brilliant and the atmosphere created was hypnotic. The guitar layering and drum work is what stood out for me in this work. The guitars are so perfectly in sync at high tempos even though they are playing 2 totally different riffs. The drumming draws on percussion influences from Egyptian and Arabian music and when you combine this with strong production and vocals what you get is quite amazing.
It is a comforting feeling to know that the metal genre is still capable of originality and innovation. As I have discovered Crescent I can only go deeper into what this band has to offer, and I am looking forward to their future.
