It has gone beyond a coincidence that Swedish bands produce quality heavy metal. It seems that the newer generation of bands are carrying the flag of their ancestors, and are leading metal into some exciting realms.
I had the pleasure of listening to Black Bay's album, Welcome Apocalypse, this week and was pleasantly surprised. The album, polished in production draws on many great bands which have come before them. Just by listening to songs such as, Anger to Nowhere, I hear an industrial homage to Rammstein, Victorious, reminds me of that Metallica sound that would evolve from the BlackAlbum onwards, with vocals that reminded me of Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve. The music delves into progressive territory as well with songs like; Illusion & Dream, Sicker and Above Reality. The band's vocalist was a stand out for me on this record. His diversity is what impressed me primarily. At times the vocals where uncanny to early Jens Kidman, but then switched to a more mature James Hetfield, and many other great vocalists you can think of.
I loved this album for its great riffing, thoughtful musicality, professional production and songs which are easy to listen to, whilst being thought provoking and enjoyable. This album is likely to please many who love metal in its more understandable, less brutal format. The flow of the songs is something I was impressed with the most. Each with its own story and a well thought out guitar solo to accompany it. I can only look forward to more from Black Bay.
