Metal is something that I still struggle to describe how much I love. I think I speak for a lot of fans when I say it is not merely about the music, but it is a lifestyle, something you live and breathe everyday. Like the great Rob Zombie once elaborated on, (and I roughly quote), "Metal is not something you get into for a summer, or a period on your life. No one says, "I used to listen to a few Slayer songs back in the day", but rather they have Slayer carved across their chest". It is a genre that many consider to be the bastard son of rock n' roll and blues and something that is made for outsiders.
It is well known that this music is listened to my millions of people around the glove, and has a dedication like no other. However, many bands can go onto selling multi-platinum records and still be completely unknown by the public, and that's just the way metal is. Metal is the most unprocessed, rawest and passionate music around. Its artists and its fans do not subscribe to modern trends or what bands should look like and how they should sound. Metal artists and fans alike never go into it thinking they'll be millionaires and have the sex, drugs and rock n' roll lifestyle, but instead seek out the music out of passion.
Metal will forever remain underground, and its fans and myself included would not have it any other way. Its attitude and complete disregard for the norm is what will keep it there. Its harsh sound, gutteral vocals, screaming guitars and fast paced drums is what will keep it there.
Most importantly, metal's refusal to go with the grain is why it will never break the mainstream, but that has never been one of its objectives.
