Alert! I've come across a new and upcoming thrash band, "The Generation's Army". Their debut album is now and is entitled, "Still Screaming". Everything about this band's first effort is great, the influence of early Slayer and Metallica is strong here, as well as the remaining Big 4 and other major thrash bands, and how could I forget Iron Maiden. The album takes a leaf out of albums like, "Hell Awaits, Show No Mercy, Kill Em' All, Bonded by Blood and Among the Living."
The LP begins with the title track, an eery, clean sounding guitar starts this album off strong, but not for long. The distortion kicks in and I'm taken back to what was the peak of thrash metal. This album fits perfectly with the greats that came before it. "World Cop", was a personal favourite, the song had everything that I love so dearly about thrash metal. Chugging guitars, heavy kick pedals, bumped up bass and fast chord changes. Upon hearing this song the nostalgia kicked in and I was taken back to that early Megadeth sound, "So Far, So Good..So What!", to be more specific.
The production on the album has a certain authenticity and rawness to it that you just don't find in modern metal, and it has become a dying art form. The raw sound of the album and vocals draw on the Big 4 of thrash metal, as well as other honourable mentions, "Testament, Overkill and Exodus", to name a few. It is great to hear albums that are rough around the edges, like this one, because I can hear the imperfections and the music in its purest form without the editing of heavy production.
Every song on this album is strong, you will find yourself with a consistent smile, and an itch to headbang, but most importantly I am proud that the genre can still produce music that recognises the importance of its founders and does them justice but is also bringing something new to the table.
