Mastodon are back at it again this year with their follow up to, "Emperor of Sand", this quick fix will surely have you wanting more. Masterful musicianship and having time to star in Game of Thrones, is there anything these guys can't do??
But let's get down to it, this 20 minute effort by the band is nothing short of what you'd expect...brilliance. The album's artwork alone is beautiful, and the attention to detail that went into creating it reflects in the music that is contained. "North Side Star", gets things kicking, and it may be my favourite off this album, (or is it Blue Walsh, or the title track? I can't decide, I loved every minute). It starts with a classic Mastodon sound and carries itself with perseverance for 6 minutes.
"Blue Walsh", may take the cherry for this album, the song has the story telling nature you'd expect from the band, layered vocals and requires your complete attention, oh and the chorus is catchy too.
I'll save, "Toes to Toes", for your own interpretation, there's just so much happening and it is the perfect mix between heavy and melancholy.
I do want to focus however on the closing track, "Cold Dark Place", which is so difficult to categorise. It has all the elements of an acoustic ballad, however the song switches between minor and major sounds, taking your emotions on a wave of its own. Things are brought back up with a perfect solo, the rhythm of which it is being played over sets the scene up for an epic finale to this EP.
Overall, I am more than impressed and am keeping a close eye on an Australian tour which I hope comes sooner than later, this is a strong effort and combined with "Emperor of Sand", it is hard to fault anything this band puts out.
