Where do I even begin?... Dream Theater touched down in Australia to greet us with their, "Images and Words and Beyond Tour" and it is quite difficult to write this post as there aren't really words to describe this experience. I managed to catch the band in 2014, on their, "Along for the Ride" tour and was left shattered and scrambling for words to describe what it is to see this band live, so finding out one of my top 3 bands would return, had me excited.
The lights go out, everyone takes their seats, a symphonic tune plays over the speakers, the band's way of telling the audience to prepare for the next 3 hours. I look over and the God that is Petrucci walks towards the front of the stage, the lights go on and the ripping opening riff to "The Dark Eternal Night" begins. From the first second of the show I couldn't wipe the smile off my face, whether it was during "Hell's Kitchen, Metropolis Pt. 1, Learning to Live or A Change of Seasons", the band's ability to take the audience on a journey of emotions is something I've yet to experience elsewhere. Captivating in its nature, to see the riffs being played live, with such accuracy leaves you questioning if the band is from Earth?
The technicality and proficiency of each member is no secret to fellow musicians and fans, but seeing all 4 instruments being played at such speed in its complex nature is hard to process, even when witnessing it. I must give high appraise to James Labrie, for proving the his critics wrong, the man killed it, particularly his performance in, "Wait for Sleep", had the audience engaged and emotional.
I could write for a very long time about what this concert was, but it would never do it justice. From the opening notes to the closing brilliance that is "A Change of Seasons", Dream Theater have once again managed to leave me speechless and shattered, taking my emotions on a ride and creating a night which was not just a concert, but an experience which I am so fortunate to have seen twice and it makes me even more appreciative of this bands existence.
