If there was one band who should have a genre named after them it's Sweden's, "Meshuggah". Over the course of this blog you'll notice my obvious obsession and appraise for these Gods, after witnessing them live I am lead to believe the 5 set piece are half-man, half-robotic.
The bands reputation within the genre, particularly the underground is one of great appraise, Robert Trujillo and Devin Townsend amongst many. The complexity, rhythm, sense of groove and lyricism are attributes that only this unit has, and is something that is constantly being imitated to a lesser degree. Great duration between albums has always lead to great delivery, with the band continuously raising the bar with each release, "ObZen", and the latest, "Violent Sleep of Reason", are two examples of the bands effort to show the metal audience that there are no signs of slowing down. In order to completely contemplate the gravity of the band and what it represents a live show is a pre-requisite. The light show will not only have you speechless but the coordination, tone and almost mechanical ability will change your perception on whats possible, just look to a live recording of, "Bleed".
For 30 years the band has done what no one else can really encapsulate, their influence is becoming evermore present in the modern direction of metal, with many drawing on the band's signature polyrhythm style. In one way or another the band's mark on the genre has been of large significance, to compare it would be what Slayer is to thrash metal, one can't exist without the other.
Follow up posts of my journey into discovering this band, seeing them live twice in two nights and how I came to meet the band will be written about shortly.
